RIP Affirmative Action: You’re Now a Thing of Speculative Fiction

Gloria Muñoz is a Colombian American writer, translator, and advocate for multilingual literacy. She is the award-winning author of This is the Year, which won the 2026 International Literacy Award for Young Adult Fiction and an International Latino Book Award. Her latest novel, They Called Us Wicked, follows four young women as they explore deep questions about power, technology, magic, and community. Her acclaimed poetry collections Your Biome Has Found You, and Danzirly, which won the Ambroggio Prize and the Gold Medal Florida Book Award, dazzle with thought-provoking images and creative use of language and form. Her other honors include an Academy of American Poets Poet Laureate Fellowship, a Hedgebrook Fellowship, being a Macondista, Highlights Foundation’s Diverse Verse Fellowship, and Lumina’s Multilingual Writing Award. Gloria is proud to be a part of MNBIPOC Kidlit Creators collective and Las Musas.

Her writing has been anthologized most recently by A24 and has appeared in American Poetry, MagazinePuerto del Sol, VIDA Review, Acentos Review, Lumina, the Rumpus, Yes Poetry, Juke Joint, Best New Poets, Sweet, Burrow Press, Cosmonauts Avenue, Entropy, Wildness, Cagibi, and elsewhere. She holds degrees from Sarah Lawrence College and the University of South Florida. A proponent of cross-disciplinary collaboration, Gloria has worked alongside botanists, musicians, dancers, historians, classicists, visual artists, conservationists, and neuroscientists.

Through Moonlit Música, a bilingual media company she co-founded, she writes narrative scripts and songs for children, adolescent, and adult programming. Notable clients include The New York Times, Comedy Central, hulu, Rebel Girls, Apple TV, Google, FX, and Hatch, for which she has developed beloved sleep story characters, including Mari Mariposa, a bilingual butterfly with a passion for community building. Gloria is the co-host of the Kind of Major pop culture and society podcast. When she is not writing, Gloria teaches for the Boyd Mills and works as an organizer in her community to bring awareness to social causes including multilingual literacy, education, climate change, and immigration. She does this all for her own kid and for all kids who deserve a world they can dream big about. Being a mom inspires Gloria’s creativity and has inspired her to lead workshops for mothers on sustaining a rich artistic practice alongside parenting.
